Will you be the Circus Elephant or the Bumble Bee?

Hi KQ,

During my course, I managed to find some time (actually just like u guys, I wasnt very attentive in class) to read about some self-improvement articles and found the following stories to be inspiring...

Are you the Circus Elephant?

You may have seen at times, huge circus elephants held in place with small chains and poles. At the time when the elephant was first chained in place, it was too small and the chain and pole too big for it to pull free. While it is young, the elephant then learns it can't break the chain. When it is older, bigger and easily able to break it - it never tries because it's trapped within its own view of the world - that view being that it can't break the chain.

Are you the Bumble Bee?

Athlete Jana Pitman has one tattooed on her, various clubs and associations have this wee creature as their logo, books have been written and all because supposedly - based on the aerodynamics of the bumble bee's body - it should never be able to fly. Not knowing that - it flies anyway.

We are often so used to our own environment that we some time failed to realize alot of time, our future is the result of our action today. It's all a matter of your own choice.

Try to be the bumble bee today! Refuse limitations set on you by others or yourself and flap those teeny little wings until you get some air!

Hi KQ,

Pls note that the last round when our graduates applied to the polys for further progression in the Apr 07 intake, the GPA cut off is very high, i.e., at least 3.5 & above. Our current Yr 2 students will likely face a tough fight for their furthur studies in the polys come Apr 08. All Higher Nitec students regardless of which business courses they are from in ITE would also be competing for the same type of courses offered by the polytechnics.

FYI, following are the courses offered by poly in Apr 07.

Accountancy
Accounting & Finance
Banking & Financial Services
Business Administration
Business Information Technology
Business Management
Business Studies

Culinary & Catering Management
Customer Relationship & Services Mgt (NEW at RP)
Cyber & Digital Security

Internet & Multimedia Development
Law & Management
Leisure & Resort Management

The Oyster

There once was an oyster whose story I tell,
Who found that some sand had got into his shell.
It was only a grain, but it gave him great pain
For oysters have feelings although they're so plain.

Now, did he berate the harsh workings of fate
that brought him to such a deplorable state?
Did he curse at the government, cry for election,
And claim that the sea should have given him protection?

No- he said to himself as he lay on a shell,
Since I cannot remove it I shall try to improve it.
Now the years have rolled around, as the years always do.
And he came to his ultimate destiny: stew.

And the small grain of sand that had bothered him so
Was a beautiful pearl all richly aglow.N
ow the tale has a moral, for isn't it grand
What an oyster can do with a morsel of sand?

What couldn't we do if we'd only begin
with some of the things that get under our skin.

Karma - In Another Perspective

Hi KGs,

I am surprised some of you arent sure of your GPA when asked, I am posting the results of your cumulative GPAs so that you know exactly where you stand in your academic performance. I will also be posting your subsequent CAs results here in future.

PPE is an application from poly issued specifically to ITE students in their Yr 2 whose GPA meet a certain requirement. This year, the cut-off is 3.0 (figure changes every yr). Students in their Yr 2 apply using their 3rd sem cumulative GPA. However, if their result in Sem 4 pulls their overall GPA down subsequently, they may be removed from the poly of their dream again.

In other words, by the time you reach your sem 3, whether you can get into poly is determined.

This year, some classes have half the class qualified to apply while some have only a small handful of 3-6. Why the vast difference? Let's analyze those classes that have half qualified to apply. Each of the successful applicants is different in terms of their learning ability, family background, financial status, individual problems but they all have something in common, that is, good attitude and hardwork. They are able to put aside their other distractions and stay committed in their studies. They get to reap the fruits of their labor. Like Karma, treat others with kindness and you will be rewarded in a way or another..Put in good attitude and hardwork in your studies, you WILL get into the poly of your dreams..

If you are not satisfied with your GPA or your current life status, you CAN make a change - on 1 condition...you have to start NOW.

In case, you are wondering, I taught those classes myself before.

Bone Marrow Donor Program Talk - 28 Feb 07

To: All Non-Chinese

In collaboration with the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP), our school is embarking on a community service project, together with some students from SMU to help BMDP recruit potential donors from minority groups (Malays and Indians) and to raise awareness about the work of BMDP. This will increase the chances of finding a compatible donor for patients from minority groups who are in need of a bone marrow transplant.

Due to a lack of donors from minority ethnic groups in the local Bone Marrow Donor Registry, our focus is to help BMDP increase their donors’ pool in this area. BMDP has only 400,000 donors in Singapore with Malays and Indians each contributing to about 4% of the total figure. One common illness that requires a bone marrow transplant is Leukemia. The chance of finding a matching bone marrow within the same ethnic group is 1 out of 20,000, whereas it is an almost 0% chance of finding a match from a different ethnic group.

We aim to spread this awareness with a series of Donor Awareness and Recruitment Drive on 28 Feb 2007. Attendance will be taken. Booths will be setup at the road shows with stations mended by nurses to retrieve blood samples from potential donors on the same day. It is a prick on the finger requiring minimal blood.

Venue: AVA Projection Room
Time: 1 to 1.45pm (pls be punctual)

Interclass Games

Would anyone be interested if I were to arrange an interclass competition on say...table tennis? since you guys seem so keen in it? To kick off, we can arrange teams to play against KA? Purpose - just for fun, just to see which class is better at what sports. Once the winning team has been identified, we will set up another round with another class till we find the ultimate champions...the answer seems clear though..our class should stand a good chance since so many of you play like professionals, huh?

Overseas Trip 2007

I am considering a 3-4 days overseas trip in your semester 3 or 4. Purpose - can be anything from doing charity work to nuturing the entrepueneur spirit in you. Cost - Student is expected to pay at least 1/3 of the total cost. Of course, we can do fund raising to reduce your financial burden if need to. Destination - you decide. So give a thought to it, I am open to any ideas...
